Shoulder Replacement

Welcome to the Shoulder Page of Dr. Hans J. Poessel, a highly skilled and experienced German Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in the UAE. Dr. Poessel specializes in the comprehensive management of shoulder conditions, including Shoulder Replacement, offering easy-to-understand and comprehensive care for patients seeking relief from shoulder pain and dysfunction.

Shoulder Replacement, also known as Shoulder Arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to replace the damaged or diseased parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with severe shoulder arthritis, irreparable rotator cuff tears, or complex fractures that cannot be effectively treated with conservative measures.

Understanding the impact that shoulder pain and dysfunction can have on your daily activities and quality of life, Dr. Poessel is committed to providing personalized treatment options to alleviate pain, improve shoulder function, and enhance your overall well-being.

When you choose Dr. Hans J. Poessel for your Shoulder Replacement, you can expect the following comprehensive approach:

1. Accurate Diagnosis and Evaluation: Dr. Poessel begins by conducting a thorough evaluation, including a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination. Diagnostic imaging tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans, may be utilized to assess the extent of shoulder damage and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

2. Types of Shoulder Replacement Implants: There are two main types of shoulder replacement implants: Reverse Shoulder Replacement and Anatomic Shoulder Replacement.
• Reverse Shoulder Replacement: This type of implant might be used when there is a severe rotator cuff tear or significant loss of shoulder function. It involves reversing the anatomy of the shoulder joint, placing a socket component on the upper arm bone (humerus) and a ball component on the shoulder blade (scapula). This design helps to compensate for the damaged rotator cuff muscles and allows other muscles to provide shoulder stability and function.
• Anatomic Shoulder Replacement This type of implant is used when there is intact rotator cuff function and a more normal anatomy. It involves replacing the damaged ball component of the upper arm bone (humerus) with a metal ball and attaching a plastic socket component to the shoulder blade (scapula). This design aims to restore the natural anatomy and function of the shoulder joint.

3. Surgical Procedure: Dr. Poessel will carefully evaluate your condition and discuss the most suitable type of shoulder replacement implant for your specific case. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. The damaged parts of the shoulder joint are removed, and the artificial components are securely placed in the bone. The goal is to restore the joint’s function, alleviate pain, and improve range of motion.

4. Rehabilitation and Follow-up Care: After the surgery, Dr. Poessel recognizes the importance of postoperative rehabilitation in optimizing recovery and restoring shoulder function. He collaborates closely with rehabilitation specialists to develop a personalized rehabilitation program tailored to your specific needs. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress, adjust the rehabilitation plan as necessary, and ensure optimal outcomes.

5. Patient Education and Support: Dr. Poessel prioritizes patient education and ensures that you have a clear understanding of your condition, treatment options, and expected outcomes. He takes the time to answer your questions, provide guidance, and offer ongoing support throughout your treatment and recovery journey.

IMPORTANT REMARKS:

It must be understand, that selection of treatment or implant and survival of surgical results are depending on patient weight, health and physical activity level.
Especially on the shoulder joint, our joint with the WIDEST movement possibilities and daily life usage, sometimes a minimal implant needs to be changed surgically earlier to a larger version or to a reverse implant, as the bone stock on the one side and the movement demands on the other side might not hold the connection between implant and bone.
Hence, In my clinical practice I want to protect and maintain the rotator cuff as long as possible!
In the Hip Joint, followed by the Knee joint, the availability of bone stock allows a much longer standing time before a revision surgery must be planned.
